How To Style Curly Hair at Home

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

Hey gals (and guys!) Ouidad-trained hair stylist here. The number one question I get in the salon: how do I get amazing salon results at home? Keep reading to step up your curl game.

  1. Always apply your products on wet hair (like, fresh-out-of-the-shower wet!) This allows the product to distribute itself evenly and smoothly. This also helps the product penetrate the hair shaft.

  2. The order in which you layer your products is sooo IMPORTANT! Always put your leave-in conditioner on first on wet hair. Next, if your ends are dry and damaged, smooth a little oil on your ends. Any oil you like is fine (my favorites are castor, argon, grape seed and jojoba). Last, apply your favorite gel or mousse from roots to ends.

  3. Next brush your hair with a Wet brush. This is brand of brushes that you can find at Target, Sally's, or anywhere online. These brushes are great for de-tangling and further distributing the product. If you have another de-tangling brush that you really like, use that!

  4. Once you have brushed your products through your hair, flip your head over and rake through your hair with your hands to create separated curls. GENTLY scrunch your hair with your palms. Be gentle so that you don't create frizz!

  5. Finally, flip your head back over and let your hair air-dry or diffuse for best results.

TIPS for using your diffuser:

-When diffusing, flip your head forward for maximum volume.

-Scoop your hair into your diffuser first THEN turn the diffuser on. Keep the diffuser still for the first 5 minutes, just allow your hair to try as though you are in an upside-down old school hooded dryer.

-Once your hair is mostly dry, focus the air on the roots and mid-shaft area. For thick hair, use hot hair, highest blow power. For medium hair, hot air and medium blow power. For fine curls, medium heat, medium power.

-Once dry, fluff and spray with a light holding spray (optional, but in humid Florida where I live, I encourage it LOL)
